You'd be better off sticking to the politics threads. Very few on here as clueless as you when it comes to talking football.

Ask Watford or Villa fans if they thought he was a "walking disaster"
File this under, I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about along with Germany's actions in WWII

Plenty of good footballers would say different.
Maybe you know better?

I don't wish to speak illl of the dead and all that, but how Taylor got an MBE for 'services to football' is beyond me.
He never won anything significant, either as a player or a manager.
And as if that isn't bad enough, he took that brilliant team of Bobby Robson's in 1990 and destroyed it. We very nearly won the World Cup in Italia 90 yet under Taylor we finished last in the 1992 Euros and failed even to qualify for USA 94.
This wasn't bad luck. He payed 54 players in his first two years in charge, constantly swapping and changing. He preferred journeymen footballers - Carlton Palmer, Andy Sinton - over world class players like Chris Waddle, who was European Player of the Year yet didn't even make Taylor's squad.
The low point for me was when he made that odious little Chelsea thug Dennis Wise captain of our national team for that mini tournament in the USA, in which we finished, you guessed it, last (losing 2-0 to the USA in the process).
He may have been a very nice bloke but he was a walking disaster when it came to top flight management in football. Let's not gloss over the facts just because he's dead.

I always enjoyed listening to him on 5 Live. He came across as a good bloke and far more insightful and balanced than many other pundits.

Makes you feel old doesn't it when all England managers before Terry Venables have now all passed on!
Watched some of the tributes last night and had forgotten how well he did with both Watford and Villa. Deserved at least one League Title really and was probably the ideal choice for England manager. Great shame that documentary is what a lot of people remember him for.

Taylor took Watford from bottom of Fourth Division to second place in First Division in six years.
Yes, this was in a time when football was just more simply and romantic but that is just a monumental achievement. And it will never, ever be repeated.

Revered by not just one club's support...but two in Watford and Villa.
I think those two sets of support will have a lasting kinship..thats a massive tribute to the man.

He wasn't helped in the England job by not always having the talent pool to pick from. The top players in the team were very good (at least for their clubs...) but there was no depth and this was exposed when we got a few injuries or players weren't performing.
The Netherland's match was a fucking travesty though. I've never liked Koeman either.
That said, what he was doing picking Keith Curle instead of Tony Adams in the first place god only knows.
I see his reign and Hodgson's as very similar in some ways. Both were out of their depth when it came down to it and suffered a bit from having shit players to pick from.

Floundered? He took over Villa when they had been relegated and brought them back up. And finished second in the top division. Went back to Watford later and won the Division 2 title and then the Division 1 Playoff final the following season to get them back to the Premiership.
3 league titles 5 second place finishes 1 playoff final win 1 FA Cup final
Wish some of our managers could flounder like that

Sorry to hear of his death. the bloke did a stupendous job at watford, but that was as far as it went. After that he floundered. As England manager he was an embarrassment and showed he didn't have a clue by picking players such as Carlton palmer, Andy Sinton and, worst of all, Geoff Thomas. But by all accounts he was a very nice chap. RIP Graham.

Always came across as a decent bloke with a sense of humour and performed minor miracles in club management. We'll put aside Carlton Palmer for now as it's not good form to speak ill of the dead.
RIP
